Minding the Corporate Gap

WORLD: LGBTIQ

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR), Minding the Corporate Gap: How Human Rights Defenders and Companies Can Work Together to Tackle Discrimination against Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Persons, May 2022.

As the title suggests, this guide is primarily a publication for human rights defenders to engage with businesses to become active in promoting the rights of SOGIESC people. The guide aims to accompany the Standards of Conduct for Business: Tackling Discrimination against Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans and Intersex People adopted in 2017.

The guide has four main sections: 1) The role of the private sector in tackling discrimination against LGBTI persons; 2) Engaging companies on LGBTI issues: where to start?; 3) Encouraging companies to go further and 4) Key risks. In this last section, the guide highlights the risks of pinkwashing (i.e. to highlight one’s LGBTI commitments to distract attention from a poor record in other areas of human rights, labour standards) or bluewashing (i.e. to associate oneself with the United Nations as a way of burnishing one’s image as champion of human right).
