Lawmakers Voted to Back Same-Sex Marriage and Abortion Access in Northern Ireland

UK Public General Act on Same Sex Marriage and Abortion in Northern Ireland received Royal Assent on 24 July

The UK Parliament accepted an amendment requiring the British government to extend same-sex marriage rights to Northern Ireland. Another amendment aiming to extend access to abortion in Northern Ireland was also backed. Both amendments will take effect if there is still no government in Northern Ireland by 21 October of this year and are subject to a future executive potentially overturning or amending the law. Following agreement by both Houses on the text of the Bill, it received Royal Assent on 24 July. The Bill is now an Act of Parliament (law).
