Trans Rights are Human Rights

GATE / ILGA-Europe / TGEU, Trans Rights are Human Rights, Dismantling misconceptions about gender, gender identity, and the human rights of trans people, July 2021

While there have been positive developments in the rights and representation of trans people over the last 10 years in Europe, the three organisations publishing this document also note a backlash. In particular, the arguments constituting this backlash often imply a fundamental opposition between the rights of trans people and the rights of women, or between the rights of trans people and the rights of children. This very useful kind of factsheet therefore aims to deconstruct these arguments and to propose ways of responding when they are put forward. It is structured around three sections - claims about trans people, claims about the impact of trans rights on women, and claims about the impact of trans rights on children. The document takes the form of tables each of which starts with an argument («What you are hearing») against the right to self-determination for trans people (such as «The existence of trans people is a new phenomenon; it is a fashion»). After this follows a section entitled «How to respond» containing key facts on the situation and talking points on the topic, followed in some cases by an analogy to help conceptualise the claim, and references to further reading related to the facts.
